Journalist's death isn't changing minds in Congress

In this June 17, 2011 photo, journalist James Foley receives applause from students at the Christa McAuliffe Regional Charter Public School in Framingham, Mass. Foley had been released a month prior after being detained for six weeks in Libya. Students at the school had written government leaders to work for his release. Foley was abducted in November 2012 while covering the Syrian conflict. Islamic militants posted a video showing his murder on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014, and said they killed him because the U.S. had launched airstrikes in northern Iraq. (AP Photo/MetroWest Daily News, Ken McGagh) MANDATORY CREDITThe murder of James Foley is unlikely to change views on military intervention.

We want our politicians to act like LBJ. But not really.

LBJ in VietnamThe problem with Barack Obama is that he just doesn't love the full contact sport of politics. He has no capacity for the inside machinations or tactical brutality we associate with a more sophisticated and celebrated president

Ferguson protests cool after Holder visits

Demonstrators protest the fatal shooting of Michael Brown August 20, 2014 in Ferguson, MissouriProtests in the strife-torn town of Ferguson cooled late Wednesday after the top US law enforcement official pledged a full investigation into the slaying of teenager Michael Brown that kicked off days of racially charged unrest. Earlier Wednesday Attorney General Eric Holder met with the parents of Brown, a black unarmed 18-year-old who was shot dead by a white police officer on August 9. A grand jury was to begin hearing witnesses to Brown's killing, with widespread calls for the police officer to be put on trial for the fatal shooting. The attorney general, who is African-American, told Ferguson residents he had assigned the justice department's "most experienced agents and prosecutors" to investigate Brown's death, amid local suspicion that police will protect one of their own.

Violence erupts in Liberia's Ebola-hit slum

An Ebola information billboard is displayed near the John F Kennedy Memorial Medical Centre in Monrovia, on August 19, 2014Violence erupted in an Ebola quarantine zone in Liberia's capital Wednesday when soldiers opened fire and used tear gas on protesting crowds as they evacuated a state official and her family. Four residents were injured in the clashes that flared in Monrovia's West Point slum which has been sealed off as part of new security measures aimed at containing the deadly virus. The crackdown in Liberia comes as authorities around the world scramble to stem the worst-ever outbreak of Ebola, which has killed at least 1,350 people across west Africa this year. Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf quarantined West Point and Dolo Town, to the east of the capital, and imposed a night-time curfew as part of new drastic measures to fight the disease.
