Ebola: Liberia’s clampdown turns violent as Asia fears new cases

Four residents were injured in Monrovia's West Point slum when soldiers opened fire and used tear gas on crowds as they tried to evacuate a state official and her family from the quarantined quarter. The crackdown in Liberia comes as authorities around the world are scrambling to stem the worst-ever outbreak of Ebola, with the latest official toll jumping 106 in two days to 1,350 dead. Liberia, with 576 deaths from 972 diagnosed cases, is the worst hit of the four affected west African countries, with the numbers of deaths and infections rising dramatically.


Franklin battles back injury at Pan Pac Swimming Championships

Teammate Katie Ledecky was the fastest into the final with 1min 56.45sec ahead of Australia's Melanie Schlanger and American Shannon Vreeland. Franklin, 19, who suffered back spasms in training on the Gold Coast this week, had to swim again 30 minutes later in the 100m backstroke, where she qualified third fastest for the final behind Australians Emily Seebohm and Belinda Hocking. Franklin began well in her 200m heat but was overtaken by Schlanger, finishing in 1:57.63.


Holder says he understands mistrust of police

LOUIS (AP) — Attorney General Eric Holder sought Wednesday to reassure the people of Ferguson about the investigation into Michael Brown's death and said he understands why many black Americans do not trust police, recalling how he was repeatedly stopped by officers who seemed to target him because of his race.
