Former DC Mayor Marion Barry dies at 78

FILE - In this July 6, 2009 file photo, former District of Columbia Mayor Marion Barry attends a news conference in Washington. Barry, who staged comeback after a 1990 crack cocaine arrest, died early Sunday morning Nov. 23, 2014. He was 78. (AP Photo/Manuel Balce Ceneta, File)WASHINGTON (AP) — Divisive and flamboyant, maddening and beloved, Marion Barry outshone every politician in the 40-year history of District of Columbia self-rule. But for many, his legacy was not defined by the accomplishments and failures of his four terms as mayor and long service on the D.C. Council.

A way for GOP to defuse immigration issue?

In this photo taken on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014 in Aloha, Oregon, the Romero-Morales family, from left to right, Kevin, Jorge, Clara, Alan, and Naethan, pose for a picture in their home's dining room after President Obama's televised announcement on immigration. The parents, Clara and Jorge, will likely qualify for relief from deportation, because two of their sons are U.S. citizens _ but they are afraid the relief might only be temporary, and Republicans could eventually take it away. (AP Photo/Gosia Wozniacka)DENVER (AP) — Republicans in search of a way to oppose President Barack Obama's moves on immigration without alienating the nation's fast-growing population of Hispanic voters may find a playbook in Colorado.

Russian President Putin chairs a meeting of the Security Council at the Kremlin in MoscowMOSCOW (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin denied Moscow would be isolated internationally over the Ukraine crisis and said Russia's economy would not be the only one to suffer from Western sanctions and falls in oil prices and the rouble. The United States and the European Union have imposed sanctions on Russia over its annexation of Ukraine's Crimean peninsula and its backing for separatists in the east opposed to Kiev's rule. "We understand the fatality of an 'Iron Curtain' for us," Putin was quoted as saying the TASS news agency in an interview published on Sunday. ...

Woman stops to visit the memorial set up where Michael Brown was shot and killed in FergusonBy Daniel Wallis FERGUSON Mo (Reuters) - An uneasy quiet settled over Ferguson, Missouri, on Saturday evening after another day without a decision from a grand jury on whether to bring charges against a white police officer for fatally shooting a black teen. With the St. Louis suburb and the rest of the country waiting for an announcement, activists and police have been taking steps to avert more street violence. The Aug. 9 shooting triggered months of protests and a national debate over police violence. ...

Volunteer snow shovelers hit Buffalo streets as flooding fears rise

Volunteers, led by the Old First Ward Community Association, gather for a shovel brigade coordinated by the City in BuffaloBy Aaron Ingrao BUFFALO (Reuters) - As temperatures near Buffalo, New York, rose above freezing on Saturday, volunteers fanned out to help their neighbors clear the walls of snow that have paralyzed parts of the region this week, but the warming trend also raised the threat of flooding. More than 200 volunteers, called the Shovel Brigade Mob, armed themselves with shovels and headed into neighborhoods south of downtown Buffalo. The group said some residents were still stuck in their homes, days after a lake-effect system clobbered the region with up to seven feet of snow. ...
