Thai court drops murder charge against ex-PM Abhisit

Scores of demonstrators died under Abhisit's establishment-backed government in street clashes between mostly unarmed "Red Shirt" demonstrators and security forces firing live rounds in Bangkok. A criminal court in the capital ruled that it did not have jurisdiction to hear the case because Abhisit and his then-deputy Suthep Thaugsuban were holders of public office at the time and acting under an emergency decree.

Surf's up: monster waves keep California lifeguards busy

One surfer died this week, after being found unconscious in the waves off Malibu, as thousands turned out to take to their boards in waves up to 25 feet high, or enjoy the show from the comfort of the beaches. "Surf this large will have the potential to cause structural damage and significant beach erosion," the National Weather Service (NWS) said Wednesday, while forecasters say a high surf advisory will remain in force until Friday.
