Ferguson residents struggling with daily life

FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — Life in this working-class St. Louis suburb of modest brick homes and low-rise apartments hasn't been the same since Angelia Dickens' son tearfully told her, "The police shot a boy."

Iran refuses UN nuclear watchdog access to Parchin base

The reactor building at the Russian-built Bushehr nuclear power plant in southern Iran on August 21, 2010Iran will not give UN nuclear inspectors access to a military base outside Tehran that they have been seeking to visit since 2005, Defence Minister Hossein Dehgan said on Saturday. Dehgan's comments come just two days before a deadline for Iran to give its response to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) over historic allegations of a military dimension to its nuclear research. "The agency carried out several visits to Parchin (before 2005), took samples and found nothing untoward," Dehgan told the ISNA news agency. "There is therefore no reason for new access to Parchin as nothing new has come up since the last inspections."

Baltics mark 25 years since anti-Soviet human chain

(L to R) Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Roivas, Latvian Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma and Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius attend the opening of "The Baltic Way Stories" in the National Library of Latvia in Riga, on August 23, 2014The Baltic states on Saturday marked 25 years since two million people joined hands in a landmark human chain linking up their capitals to demand freedom from the Soviet Union. All three Baltic prime ministers gathered in Riga to commemorate the anniversary of this act of peaceful defiance that spanned more than 600 kilometres (400 miles) across the Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian republics of the Soviet Union and became known as the Baltic Way. "The Baltic Way was our way to freedom –- a way for our countries to show the rest of the world that we wanted to be free," Latvian Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma said alongside her Estonian and Lithuanian counterparts at the national library. "I stood near the Lithuanian border," recalled 67-year-old Andrejs Cirulis, adding that the human chain experience was a "very positive feeling".

Merkel urges Ukraine truce as Russia convoy returns home

German Chancellor Angela Merkel (L) addresses the medias next to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko after their meeting in Kiev on August 23, 2014German Chancellor Angela Merkel pushed for a new ceasefire in crisis talks with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Saturday, as a controversial Russian convoy returned home. The visit by Merkel -- the most influential Western leader to call on Kiev since the crisis erupted in the ex-Soviet state -- came ahead of crunch talks next Tuesday between Poroshenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin alongside top EU officials. Tensions surged on Friday when Russia sent scores of trucks it said were carrying aid to the stricken insurgent stronghold of Lugansk in an unauthorised move Kiev described as a "direct invasion".

Thousands march in New York City to protest police chokehold death

People march during the "We Will Not Go Back" march and rally for Eric Garner in the Staten Island borough of New YorkBy Natasja Sheriff NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Reverend Al Sharpton led thousands of chanting but peaceful activists in a march across Staten Island on Saturday to protest the death of Eric Garner, who died after New York City police put him in a banned chokehold last month. "If you can do it to him, then you can do it to any citizen and we are not going to be silent when that happens," Sharpton said at a pre-rally speech at the Mt. Sinai United Christian Church in the borough where Garner died. "Let's make this a peaceful march and get justice for my husband so that this doesn't happen to anybody else," Esaw Garner said in a somber tone to protesters. The demonstration was also in response to the death of Michael Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old African American who was shot dead by a white police officer this month in Ferguson, Missouri, sparking more than a week of violent confrontations, Sharpton said.
