Spanx, Launched with $5000, Has Made Founder a Billionaire
Congratulations to Sara Blakely. She is the youngest self-made female billionaire on Forbes's annual list. She didn't quite make the cut of the "World's 20 Richest Women". However, she's likely to be there next time.
A little more than a decade ago, Blakely launched Spanx. It's the fashionable undergarment that doesn't feel or look like a girdle - but works in the same way. Hollywood has adopted Spanx as the official underwear of the Red Carpet. That alone has helped propel the business and make Blakely, at age 41, a billionaire. As she tells Forbes magazine, she leveraged $5000 to launch the business back in 2000 (quote) "The word 'Spanx' was funny. It made people laugh. No one ever forgot it." And few celebrities are able to dress without Spanx.
