Some advice for parents with picky eaters

  • Food Restrictions Don't Work With Kids, Study Says

  • A recent Penn State study offered children increasingly sweet foods the more times they clicked a computer mouse. While some kids were content to stop clicking once they earned a cracker, others kept clicking until the got the grand prize: a cinnamon graham cracker. What this says about some children's eating habits, claim researchers, is that the more restrictions parents place on certain foods at home, the more kids will crave them. "The message is that restriction is counterproductive — it just doesn't work very well," said lead study author Brandi Rollins in the New York Times. "Restriction just increases a child's focus and intake of the food that the parent is trying to restrict."

Which Passwords Do You Need to Change to Avoid Heartbleed Bug

The Heartbleed bug that's been wreaking havoc on computers worldwide certainly sounds scary, but how do you know which of your online accounts and passwords are the most threatened by it? Mashable has posted a handy checklist of which popular websites are considered most vulnerable. While it's hard to know for certain how much damage Heartbleed has or will still cause, Mashable claims you "need" to change your passwords on Twitter, Tumblr, Google and Gmail, Yahoo and Yahoo Mail, GoDaddy, Dropbox, OKCupid, and Soundcloud. (Ironically, Mashable says no need to worry about your password at Target.com.)

Hot Doggin' It

Brett Enright, the owner of Juicys Outlaw Grill, in Corvallis, Oregon, recently traveled to the Miami-Dade County Fair where he created a 125.5-pound hot dog. He wanted to set the Guinness World Record for the largest hot dog. The weenie was 100-feet-long and weighed 51 pounds. The rest of the weight came from the bun, mustard, ketchup, relish, and sliced onions. The dog was cut up into pieces and sold to benefit an organization that provides services for the homeless.

How's this for a Phone Case

Just in case you were in need of a bottle opener or a wood saw and the only thing you had was your phone, there’s a phone case for that.  The new TaskOne iPhone case comes with 22 tools--including pliers, wire cutters, screwdrivers and more.  The phone case comes in orange, red, black or silver and is available for the iPhone 4/4s ($80) and iPhone 5/5s ($100).  Addison Shelton, who designed the case, said, “‘I wanted to design a product that would allow me to take my tools with me and never forget them at home

Elementary Students' Lunches Thrown Out for Owed Money

  • Earlier this week, officials at an elementary school in Utah took away the lunches of as many as 40 students and threw them in the trash because their parents were behind on their school-lunch payments, prompting an outcry in the community and nationwide. Officials had intended to withhold the meals from the start of the lunch period, but because they didn't learn which kids had overdue balances until after lunch was served, they ended up taking back those lunches, throwing them out and giving the kids milk and fruit instead. The school district has issued apologies online and says it's investigating the matter.

Mr. Grey Will See You Now

Here's the first movie poster.......

The first official poster for the highly anticipated Fifty Shades of Grey movie adaptation has been released, with leading man Jamie Dornan taking center stage. In fact, co-star Dakota Johnson is not represented in the poster at all. In the image, Dornan, dressed in a suit, shows off his backside as he peers out a floor-to-ceiling office window at the Seattle skyline. A tagline above him reads, "Mr. Grey Will See You Now," while the bottom of the poster advertises the film's release date as "Valentine's Day 2015."

Beware the Evil Shopping Cart

I guess this means no more buggy pushing........

More than 24,000 children visit the ER annually due to shopping-cart related injuries. That averages out to 66 kids per day, or one ER visit every 22 minutes. Strangely, the problem has only gotten worse since voluntary shopping-cart safety standards took effect in 2004. Since then, the annual number of concussions tied to shopping carts in children younger than 15 jumped nearly 90 percent. More than 70 percent of injuries were caused by kids falling out of carts, followed by running into a cart or carts tipping over. The study's lead author called carts' current safety standards "not adequate."
