Saturday Night Live star Jay Pharoah served as the unofficial host for last night's MTV Video Music Awards, where he impersonated artists including Jay Z and Kanye West. The comic channeled Jay Z to explain that the video for “Drunk in Love” was meant to be an expensive perfume ad, and ruffled feathers by pretending to be an egotistical Kanye West and declaring, "My videos cure ALS." Pharoah also joked about crushing on 21-year-old Grande. “You should not be a grown man enjoying Sam and Cat as much as your 5 year-old nephew,” he noted.
Last month, I caught up with Jay at Comedy Off Broadway where he headlined six shows in Lexington.
Later that weekend, we went for brunch at Table 310 in downtown Lexington. Over a hearty meal of bacon, we shared that neither of us attended our Senior Prom... well, the antics began and he insisted on an unofficial prom photo to show all those potential high school dates what s/he missed out on. Needless to say, it was an afternoon of laughs...
Make sure to check out Jay on SNL this Fall - he'll be returning for his fifth season. You can also search for many of his impersonations on YouTube - my favorite is this one of Stephen A. Smith from ESPN's FirstTake. Click here to watch.
