Elementary Students' Lunches Thrown Out for Owed Money
by JC Burton,posted Feb 1 2014 5:49PM
Earlier this week, officials at an elementary school in Utah took away the lunches of as many as 40 students and threw them in the trash because their parents were behind on their school-lunch payments, prompting an outcry in the community and nationwide. Officials had intended to withhold the meals from the start of the lunch period, but because they didn't learn which kids had overdue balances until after lunch was served, they ended up taking back those lunches, throwing them out and giving the kids milk and fruit instead. The school district has issued apologies online and says it's investigating the matter.
