National Guard start pullout as protests in Ferguson turn calmer

National Guard troops walk through a staging area located at a shopping center parking lot in Ferguson, MissouriBy Scott Malone and Edward McAllister FERGUSON Mo. (Reuters) - Missouri's governor ordered National Guard troops to withdraw from the riot-weary town of Ferguson on Thursday as tensions eased after nearly two weeks of racially charged protests over the fatal police shooting of an unarmed black teenager. Demonstrators were orderly for a second straight evening on Thursday, the calmest night in the St. Louis suburb since 18-year-old Michael Brown was gunned down by a white police officer on Aug. 9 under disputed circumstances. Keep them close." Ferguson erupted in anger after the teenager's slaying, with nightly rallies frequently punctuated by looting, vandalism and clashes between protesters and heavily armed riot police, often ending in volleys of tear gas and dozens of arrests.

Documented death toll in Syria war at least 191,369 through April 2014: U.N.

A Syrian army soldier loyal to Syria's President Bashar al-Assad chats with fellow fighters sitting on a balcony of a damaged building in Mleiha, which lies on the edge of the eastern Ghouta region near Damascus airport, after taking control of the area frBy Stephanie Nebehay GENEVA (Reuters) - At least 191,369 people have been killed in Syria's conflict through April, more than double the figure documented a year ago and probably still an under-estimate, the United Nations human rights office said on Friday. The U.N. report, based on data from four groups and the government that were cross-checked, reflects a reality of killing and torture while the civil war has "dropped off the international radar", U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said.

Syria reinforces air base under Islamic State attack: monitor

A girl stands in a damaged street in Ain Tarma, in Eastern Ghouta, a suburb of DamascusSyrian government forces have sent reinforcements to an air base being attacked by Islamic State militants in northeast Syria where no fewer than 30 of the radical group's fighters were killed on Thursday, a group monitoring the violence said. The airbase at Tabqa, some 40 km (25 miles) east of the city of Raqqa in northeast Syria, represents the government's last foothold in an area otherwise controlled by the Islamic State group that has seized swathes of territory in Syria and Iraq. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which says it gathers material from all sides in the Syrian conflict, said the reinforcements had been flown in overnight into Friday. It said no fewer than 30 Islamic State fighters had been killed and dozens more wounded on Thursday by heavy bombardment and landmines in areas surrounding the base.
